Game On!

1228858320At this point, we’re past Thanksgiving, and all that holiday’s typical accoutrements—unexpected relatives, post-turkey lethargy, valiantly trying to catch up with Great Aunt Agnes. And heading straight into late December’s more of the same…

Well, you heard it here first: This year can be different. Herewith, some of our party-saving favorites:

Three Theme-party Ideas

1228491777Bostonista loves going to the most exclusive parties at the sweetest locales in town, but every now and then, we love to throw a proper shindig at home with our best friends. For the holidays, we cooked up some unique ideas.

Every Friday, post-work, we’re going to meet up at a different friend’s place, each armed with a bottle of good wine, some takeout, and partake in the following activities: (more…)

Eagerly Awaiting the ANTM FINALE

1227112024It’s that time of year again. Tomorrow night a new America’s Next Top Model will be crowned and too-sweet-for-comfort Whitney’s unmerited stint as the reigning champ will finally come to a much-appreciated end.

With such a weighty decision looming on the horizon, there’s one question on our minds: Why can’t we shake the weeknight guilty pleasure that is ANTM? We really should have quit watching when controversial celebrity judge Janice Dickinson left the panel, taking most of the show’s fun with her.

Now all we’re left with is off-the-rocker host Tyra Banks, whom you might recognize from her recurring role as comedic fodder on E!’s The Soup. Oh, and she also found some success as a supermodel.

But seriously, who is going to be America’s…Next…Top…Mo…del? (more…)

A Night at the Theater

1225824344Outside of low-budget school plays and small-town versions of the Nutcracker, it had been some time since we’d taken in a real production, so we were eager to attend Carrie Fishers Wishful Drinking.

For those Bostonistas old enough to remember, Fisher, the offspring of actress Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher, was the sultry/cranky Princess Leia before she got into drugs, was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, and dropped off the face of the planet.

Now, she’s back, touring America with her one-woman show and offering up a few laughs about her whole ordeal. (Sounds a lot like a certain someone else we know—we’re looking at you, Britney.)

Bostonista Endorses: Cringe

1222960647So we’re pretty sure the real tragedy of FacebookTumblrTwitter has nothing to do with mind-boggling indiscretion, nor with the irretrievable loss of an hour at the hands of your freshman algebra classmate’s Italy photos.

The true problem, clearly, is that social networking has robbed an entire adolescent generation of the opportunity to scribble overwrought prose in dinky-locked Lisa Frank diaries.

Luckily, writer/blogger Sarah Brown has been working diligently to salvage those soon-to-be cultural relics.

Bad Kitty Makes Great Art

1221844510If you dig art but hate pretense, or just want to revel in others’ ineptitude, head over to the Museum of Bad Art’s (MOBA) installation in the basement of the Somerville Theater. The museum’s impressive collection was culled from dumpsters, yard sales, private donations, and trash day heists.

Each carefully chosen piece demonstrates a depth of incompetence nearly impossible to fake—misguided attempts at perspective, cornball subject matter, and/or bizarre color palettes. But while the art is bewilderingly, um, challenged, the terse observations by the curator(s) make this collection an absolute late-night “to do.” (more…)

Too Much Mandatory Fun

Bostonista had too much fun last night. We indulged in mandatory office fun at our staff bowling party at Kings. Next, under the influence of Chowder, we indulged in carnivorous fun over the largest steak we’ve ever seen at Toro.

Then we indulged in some Stevie Wonder-fueled dancing fun with Barbara Lynch at The Butcher Shop. Now, we’re hurting from that fun. (more…)

Night Lines: The Women Premiere

1221066161Set in New York but filmed right here in Boston, The Women made its local debut on Monday night at AMC Loews Boston Common theater. The remake of the 1930s film stars Dove, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Lexus. (Secondary players include Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Jada Pinkett Smith, Debra Messing, Cloris Leachman, Carrie Fisher, Debi Mazar, Candice Bergen, Bette Midler, and Eva Mendes.)

Even more surprising was the number of scenesters that actually showed up on a Monday, during Gossip Girl—thank you Comcast gods for DVR!—for the screening and afterparty, which was held on the Liberty Hotel’s fifth floor balcony. (more…)
